Tuskers win to keep hopes alive

Chipli, Verma sparkle in 7-wkt victory

Seasoned campaigners Bharat Chipli and Amit Verma notched up half-centuries as Bellary Tuskers thumped Belagavi Panthers by seven wickets to keep their play-offs alive in the Karbonn Smart KPL IV here on Monday.

Skipper R Vinay Kumar’s decision to bat first did not produce great dividends as the Panthers managed a modest total of 136 for seven in their allotted 20 overs. Tuskers’   Prasanna Patil troubled the Panthers batting unit and returned with impressive figures of three for 20 in his four overs.

Though the Tuskers lost opener Pavan Deshpande (2) early in their chase, captain Chipli (63) and all-rounder Verma (58 n.o.) forged an alliance of 111 runs to take their side home with four balls to spare.

The Belagavi unit produced a below-par batting performance, with only promising youngster Abhishek Reddy (35) making a noteable contribution. Stalin Hoover (23), GS Chiranjeevi (20) and R Jonathan (20) all got starts but failed to convert their scores into a big one.

Chipli and Verma played steadily and paced their innings well to avoid any major damage, after they had lost Pavan in the second over.

Chipli’s knock came off 54 balls, with three fours and as many maximums to his credit. Verma slammed four fours and two sixes.
