R'than leaders unimpressed with PM's adopt-a-village plan

Cabinet ministers and several legislators of the ruling BJP in Rajasthan have evinced no interest in the Mukhyamantri Adarsh Gram Yojna, a scheme under which the leaders are to adopt a village and ensure its holistic development.

The scheme was launched in the state on the lines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Sansaad Adarsh Gram Yogna’.

Out of 200 legislators in the state Assembly around 32 legislators have not even identified a village for adoption. It includes five cabinet ministers, 21 BJP legislators and four Congress legislators. The last date for adopting the village was June 30.

The five cabinet ministers include big names like Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria, Social Justice Minister Arun Chaturvedi, Education Minister Kali Charan Sarraf, Women and Child Development Minister Anita Bhadel and Energy Minister Pushpendra Singh.

According to panchayati raj department officials, the last date for adopting the villages has been extended twice since January. Earlier, Panchayati Raj Minister Surendra Goyal had written to all legislators regarding the adoption.

These villages were to be developed by the local area development (LAD) funds of the respective legislator and by implementing various schemes of the state and the Centre.

Despite regular reminders, 33 legislators have showed no interest in the scheme. On the contrary, the opposition Congress has 24 legislators in the state Assembly and 17 of them have already adopted villages.

The BJP legislators and ministers, who could not adopt the villages, have now written a letter to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje demanding some relaxations in the scheme.

“Many leaders come from urban areas and there are no villages. Why should we go out of our constituencies and develop a village from our LAD funds? We have asked CM to permit us for adopting a ward in our constituency, which we will develop using our resources,” said a cabinet minister on condition of anonymity.

The proposal is pending with the Chief Minister, he added.
