BPL families can get free LPG connection, says officer

Last Updated 03 September 2015, 21:54 IST

Food and Civil Service Department Deputy Director Chandrakant Nayak said that BPL cardholders can get LPG connection without deposit or price of regulator under a Central government scheme.

The list of ration cardholders will be prepared and the connection will be given as per the booking.

He said that direction had been given to all gas agencies to provide this facility without any condition. The beneficiaries should pay money only for full cylinders.

New cards

Those who have collected new BPL cards can avail this facility. The LPG agencies can get the information on BPL cards in the form of filled forms once in every 15 days from food inspectors, Nayak added.

The ration cards which were distributed before 2010 have been changed, but most of the cardholders are yet to collect them.

All BPL and APL cardholders should collect the ration cards at respective taluk offices before September 5. The pending ration cards will be cancelled, he said.

‘BPL cards with rich’

“The department has observed that many rich people had obtained BPL cards and were depriving the poor of benefits. Such ration cards will be cancelled and the sum of the ration they have got will be collected back. If anyone avails BPL card without eligibility, they can be punished under Indian Penal Code, Essential Commodities Act 1955 and Karnataka Prevention of Unauthorised Possession of Ration cards order 1977,” Nayak said.

According to the government rules, there is no need of income certificate to get BPL card. The staff of panchayat office should not force the eligible to bring income certificate. Few gram panchayats are sending recommendations for BPL cards with the application forms.
However, only food inspectors can take a call on that after going through the application.
