Moral policing: 'Muslims may think twice before recruiting non-Muslims for jobs'

Last Updated 01 September 2015, 18:31 IST

United Muslim Organisation DK district President K Ashraf spoke of a possible rise in fear among Muslims to employ Hindus, if cases of moral policing increased.

“If members of the Sangh Parivar continue to target Muslim youth for talking to Hindu girls, the members of the Muslim community will develop fear to employ a Hindu girl in their business establishments,” he said.

Speaking to mediapersons on Tuesday, he said, “If incidents relating to moral policing continue, then a day will come when Muslim merchants and entrepreneurs will have to think twice before employing a girl from other communities. Several Muslim merchants have already expressed apprehension over employing a girl from other community with the organisation.”

Referring to the recent incident of assault on Shakeer for allegedly talking to a girl from another community, Ashraf said, “The incident has made the people of the district bow their heads in shame. The incident is planned and was an attempt to disrupt the social fabric of the society. The dictatorship attitude of the Sangh Parivar members is affecting the harmony in society. Dakshina Kannada district has been witnessing rift in the name of talking to girls and transportation of cattle. The Muslims, however, love peace in the district.”

He said the district administration and police department should consider the issue seriously and initiate stringent measures against those who try to disrupt communal harmony in the district. As a precautionary measure, the security system should be beefed up in the district, Ashraf requested.

“The Sangh Parivar leaders – who were behind the attack on Shakeer – should be arrested and a case should be registered against them. The false cases registered against Shakeer should be withdrawn.

The district administration and the government should bear the medical expenses of Shakeer, who was injured after members of pro-Hindu organisations assaulted him. The police should also conduct a probe into the girl in question. A case should also be registered against persons who allegedly threatened Shakeer’s brother at the police station. All the accused in the incident should be booked under Goonda Act and should be exile from the district,” he demanded.
