The Income Tax department will set up special counters to help citizens file the income tax returns for this year at Gayatri Vihar Hall in the Bengaluru Palace Grounds on August 29, 30, 31.

The counters, which will be open from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm, will be inaugurated by N R Narayan Murthy, co-founder, Infosys Ltd, on August 29.

Addressing reporters in Bengaluru on Friday, Jayaram Raipura, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, said the government had made it mandatory for those having an income above Rs 5 lakh, with refund claims, to file their returns online.

Those having a total income below Rs 5 lakh and without any refund claims, can either file the returns manually or online.

To enable the large number of salaried employees and pensioners fulfil this responsibility, the department has undertaken the programme of providing special return receipt counters for filing returns.

He said these counters were designed to facilitate and ease the process, and all facilities, including ATM, bank payment and photo copying, were being provided under one roof. Food courts and a medical centre will also be set up. There will also be counters for senior citizens and differently abled persons. During this period, income tax returns will not be accepted at HMT Bhavan, Ganganagar, where the salary/ pensioner ranges are located.

There will be a special live programme “Hello Geleyare,” which will be aired on the Doordarshan Chandana channel to publicise the special return receipt counters from 8 am to 9 am on August 30.
