Security forces on Friday gunned down seven cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-Khaplang) in the remote Pangsha village of Tuensang district on the Indo-Myanmar border in Nagaland.

The militants were part of the strike team of the group led by NSCN-K military advisor Niki Sumi, whom the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had named as the kingpin in the June 4 attack on Indian Army in Manipur’s Chandel district in which 18 troopers were killed. Sumi was, however, not in the group on Friday, Army sources said.

According to Army sources from Kohima, the operation took place at Pangsha in Tuensang District of Nagaland, about 250 km away from state capital Kohima, almost on the Indo-Myanmar border.

A joint operation team of Indian Army, Assam Rifles and led by the Special Forces of the 21 Para regiment encountered the NSCN-K cadres, killing seven of them, including one woman.

“We already had inputs about a huge NSCN-K team moving on the other side of the border in Myanmar who would try to sneak in,” said a senior Army official from the 3 Crop headquarters near Dimapur.

“Cadres who have been neutralised were from the NSCN-K camp located at Ponyu village inside Myanmar and belong to the group headed by SS Lt Gen Niki Sumi.In yet another operation on Friday jointly conducted by the Army and Assam Police, two hardcore Karbi People Liberation Tiger (KPLT) militants were apprehended in Bhitor Kalyani, of East Karbi Anglong district in Assam.
