Three universities and technology institutes from Bengaluru - M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology and R V College of Engineering - have cleared Phase I registrations and are gearing up for the Phase II registrations to compete in the seventh year of Shell Eco-Marathon Asia (SEM Asia).

Teams representing 25 universities and technology institutes across India have cleared Phase I registrations. Shell Eco-marathon challenges high school and university students from across the world to design, build and test energy-efficient vehicles.

Through the event, teams are encouraged to stretch the boundaries of fuel efficiency in a real world urban environment. The winners are declared taking into account the mileage achieved on a litre of fuel, rather than speed. Dr Yasmine Hilton, chairperson, Shell Companies in India, said, “I am delighted to see that nearly 60 per cent students who participated last year are fielding entries again this year.  This is testimony to the experience and learning and development opportunity that SEM provides to young scientific minds.”

The first round began with submission of car designs in the form of pictures and sketches. The second round, which is scheduled from August 28 to September 1, are expected to provide technical details of their vehicle. For the final selection of teams, the judges will be evaluating their vehicles based on their technical details.
