The government is planning to reclaim sites if the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) allottees fail to construct houses within five years, Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake told the Council.

Replying to G Madhusudan of the BJP, he said five years will be given to the residential site allottees to start constructing houses. If they do not comply with this rule, the allotment will be cancelled and the plots will be taken back. Necessary amendments to MUDA’s site allotment rules will be brought in soon to prevent people from misusing MUDA sites, Sorake said.

Currently, it is mandatory for the allottees to construct houses within 10 years. The MUDA issues lease-cum-sale deed for 10 years to the allottees. Absolute sale deed is issued only when an allottee starts constructing the house. However, this rule does not apply for private layouts.

The Minister said the Urban Development Department (UDD) had recently made an announcement in this regard, but it failed to make any impact. More than 50,000 sites are currently vacant in Mysuru, he added.

Earlier, Madhusudan demanded that the government should confiscate sites and auction them if the allottees failed to construct houses within the stipulated time. People from outside Mysuru, especially Bengalureans, purchase sites in Mysuru as an investment. This trend has jacked up the real estate prices. So much so, that residents of Mysuru have not been able to buy sites. It has badly affected the development of the heritage city, he said.
