Marooned, Pandyar and Nadodi villages beg for facilities

Last Updated 30 July 2015, 18:48 IST
Surrounded by lush green paddy field, Pandyar and Nadodi is a picturesque area. However, without basic facilities including an approach road, residents are slowly deserting these villages.

The woes of families begin with the commencement of monsoon, with fields and houses getting inundated.

The villages of Pandyar and Nadodi is surrounded by Kutharguthy, Tevula, Battedadi and other areas in Munnur gram panchayat limits. More than 10 families reside on Pandyar and Nadodi villages extending to around five acres in area.

Verge of collapse
They lead a pathetic life during monsoon. About five families have already relocated to neighbouring villages. The vacant houses are on the verge of collapse.

As Pandyar and Nadodi are low-lying areas, the paddy fields are filled with flood water during monsoon. The banks of paddy fields are the only “connecting road” to the residents during summer.

There are eligible girls who have remained unmarried in the villages. Hailing from poor families, many people are not in a position to relocate. There are no proper roads to reach the houses. It is almost impossible to reach the houses during monsoon. As a result, none of the grooms have come forward to marry the girls in the villages.

When it rains, the schoolchildren cannot attend the schools. Many a time parents carry their wards on their shoulder to the nearest school. When it rains heavily, even the elders can not go to their work. “In case of emergency, we cannot even go to hospitals as we are surrounded by water,” said Mohammed, a resident.

A year ago, a boy in Pandyar was bit by a snake. “As we were surrounded by water, we could not take him to hospital. Later, the family members alerted the neighbouring villagers who came with a boat to shift the child to a hospital,” he added.

“As the land surrounding Pandyar and Nadodi belongs to private individuals, they come in the way of laying a road to the villages. On the other hand, even the elected representatives have neglected us. We have been appealing to the MLA, Zilla Panchayat members to lay a road to connect the villages. Our requests have not been heard so far,” said Ashraf.
