After opening Karnataka’s account with a gold medal winning show in the 100M breaststroke (Group I) on day one, Likith SP set the pool ablaze on Friday to win two more gold medals in contrasting fashion on day five of the 42nd Junior and 32nd Sub-Junior Aquatics Championships here.

Sharing the limelight with the 17-year-old swimmer, who won the Group I, 200M individual medley and the 200M breaststroke, was another emerging sensation from the State, Saloni Dalal. The 12-year-old won the 200M breaststroke (Group II) in record time to pocket her third gold of the meet.

With just two days to go at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, the defending champions were perched at the top of the table with 33 gold, 30 sliver and 23 bronze to their name, adding five more gold to their tally.

Apart from Likith’s double and the record-breaking show from Dalal, the State team topped the Group I, 4x100M freestyle, while Shoan Ganguly and Sanjiti Shah won the Group IV, 50M breaststroke in boys and the girls sections to help Karantaka maintain their top status.

In the 200M medley, Likith kept his composure to rally from a second’s deficit to win the gold in 2:12.43. Maharashtra’s Jason Smith finished second in 2:12.64, while Shwejal Mankar took the bronze medal in 2:18.29.

While the Basvanagudi Aquatics Centre swimmer did all the chasing in his first race, he had to see off a stiff challenge from Ansh Arora of Uttar Pradesh in the 200M breaststroke event. Though the Bengaluru boy started slowly note, he managed to build a slender 0.54 seconds lead on the first turn. Later, keeping his opponent in check, he shifted gears in the final 100 metres to sprint his way to claiming the gold.

In the girls’ section, Dalal had no trouble in winning the 200M breaststroke (Group II) in record time.

The National Games bronze medalist won the gold in 2:52.29, overhauling the pervious best of 2:53.58 set by Tamil Nadu’s AV Jayaveena in 2012. Muskaan Tolani of Maharashtra won the silver in 2:54.88, while Karnataka’s Harshitha Jayaram claimed the third place in 2:55.87.
