Niranjan dazzles

Karnataka para-swimmers, led by Niranjan Mukundan, hogged the limelight in the 11th International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports (IWAS) World Junior Games at Stadskanaal, Netherlands on Tuesday.

Niranjan clinched seven gold and three silver medals in different categories to emerge as the junior world champion in the Games. 

 The 20-year old from Bengaluru bagged the yellow metal in 400M freestyle, 50M butterfly, 100M freestyle, 100M backstroke, 50M backstroke, 200M freestyle and 200M Individual Medley. He finished second in 50M breaststroke, 100M breaststroke and 50M freestyle events.

Niranjan, who has been diagnosed with spina bifida (a congenital disorder that causes muscle compression), had also dazzled in the previous edition of the Games held in Stoke Mandeville, United Kingdom. He had gone on to win eight medals out of nine events, including three gold.

In the boys’ under-18 category, another Bengaluru boy, Ashray D won three silver (50M butterfly, 100M butterfly, 50M freestyle) and one bronze (200M freestyle). In the under-16 section, India’s Revanth finished third in shot put.

In the girls’ challenge, Davangere’s Revathi Nayak won one silver (100M breaststroke) and one bronze (50M breaststroke).
