CMC President Muttaiah said that Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy had been requested to make a recommendation to the minister for municipal administration, to induce a new unit in order to increase the capacity of the drinking water purifying unit at Rathnagiri extension.

Speaking after carrying out an inspection of drinking water pipeline work near Muttinamma temple in Shankarapura in Chikkamagaluru on Sunday, he said the new purifying unit requires approximately Rs five crore and there was a need to draw a detailed project report towards the same.

A delegation of CMC members, led by MLA C  T Ravi, has met Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy in Bengaluru recently, and has requested him to make recommendations to Municipal Administration Minister Qamar-ul-Islam towards the induction of a new water purifying unit, as the capacity of the existing unit is limited.
The Council Chairman has held a discussion with Underground drainage board Managing Director Manivannan and has directed him to bring the issue to the notice of the minister, for further steps.

The under-construction pipeline, if completed, can cater to half of the wards in the city by facilitating the supply of water from Hirekolale stream. At present, the CMC has prioritised drinking water supply and waste management.
Four water tankers have been kept ready for the supply of drinking water, Muttaiah said.

He said he had also been informed on the drinking water woes in Lakshmisha Nagar. Five inches of water have been obtained in a borewell dug behind PNT quarters. New pipelines are being laid in Muttinamma temple, Chikkamma temple, Lakshmisha Nagar and Shankarapura fourth cross areas.

The supply of water from borewell will be used as a substitute for water supply from Yagachi.

The CMC president has sought public’s cooperation for CMC’s efforts to create a clean environment by giving garbage generated in houses to the waste collection carts and not to dump waste in drains or roads or in vacant sites.

‘Criminal action’

Despite imposition of complete ban on sale of low quality plastic carry bags, some shopkeepers continue to sell them, illegally.

Many complaints in this regard have been submitted by people to the CMC. Continuous efforts will be made to check the illegal sale of the low quality carry bags. If the shopkeepers do not stop selling them, criminal case will be booked against them after cancelling their licence, Muttaiah said.

Leaders Keshavamurthy, Shashiprasad, Gopi, Venkatesh, Deepak and others were present.
