Humpy waits for official word

A day after the All India Chess Association (AICF) moved the FIDE Ethics Commission against Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, the player has said that she was still waiting for an official word on the matter.

“I haven’t heard anything from AICF or the Delhi Chess Association (DCA) in this regard. There has been no communication from them, so I would not like to comment at this point,” said Humpy.

“I am preparing for the Asian Continental meet to be held next month (in Al Ain, UAE),” added the 28-year-old.

Humpy was adjudged to have lost ‘on time’ during her match on June 25 in the Commonwealth Championship here but she lodged a protest citing ambiguity in arbiter’s announcement of the time control rules.

The appeal’s committee declared that there was no transgression of FIDE rules on the part of the organisers and Humpy should have approached the arbiter to clear her doubts, if she had any. She subsequently withdrew from the tournament, leading to AICF taking a strong stance.

“Her reaction and labelling the tournament as not up to international standards was uncalled for. She should have continued in the tournament and not withdrawn. Her opting out definitely brought disrepute to the tournament” said DCA secretary A K Verma who was also the Organising Secretary of the championship.
