'Politics over cleaning of drains'

Last Updated 24 June 2015, 04:13 IST

The Delhi government will be solely responsible for waterlogging during rainy season as the drains under its control are clogged, said the North Corporation Mayor Ravinder Gupta on Tuesday.

Mayor of North Delhi Ravinder Gupta inspected various areas under the civic agency for monsoon preparedness.

During the inspection it was found that the PWD drain adjacent to Zakhira flyover is not desilted.

He said that the North Delhi Municipal Corporation is taking best possible steps to minimise the waterlogging during monsoon season but the PWD department has not desilted many of its drains.

He said the corporation had to put up a pump set at the drain after the pre-monsoon showers in the city on Sunday so the citizens do not have to face any inconvenience and to ease the traffic movement.

While inspecting the PWD drain parallel to Najafgarh road near Jindal ITF Centre, he directed the officials of engineering department to write a letter to PWD department regarding the condition of the drains.

He said drains which belong to PWD have not been desilted should be taken up with them.

“The sewage water will flow on roads as it starts raining. We have seen such examples a few days ago due to sudden heavy rain. The outfall of MCD drains is in PWD drains so if the latter not desilted waterlogging will take place in colonies.”

During the inspection of municipal flood drain near Shastri Nagar, he said the Delhi Jal Board’s ongoing project near Shastri Nagar drain can obstruct the flow of water and create problem during rains.

“The citizens are facing the problem of waterlogging during rain due to the dirty politics of the Delhi government. The city government is solely responsible for the waterlogging mess in the city.”

“The situation of waterlogging is due to the Delhi government’s ill-preparedness as the drains falling under the corporations are desilted, but most of the bigger drains which belong to PWD or Irrigation and Flood Control department are choked.”
