A 21-year-old woman was set ablaze by her mother-in-law at a farmhouse in south Delhi on Tuesday. Shabbu was rescued within seven minutes of a PCR call made by her husband Nizamuddin, police said.

“The woman escaped a meticulous plan aimed at eliminating her which was hatched by her mother-in-law. Thanks to her quick thinking,” said a police officer. Police said their control room had received a call pertaining to the incident at 3.37 pm. Nizamuddin reported that his mother had locked his wife in a servant quarter at Akash Farm House in Fatehpur Beri and set the room on fire.

“The information was immediately marked to PCR Van E-36. A Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) immediately rushed to the spot and, within seven minutes, found that there was a fire at the main gate,” the officer added.

The staff of the PCR broke down the door without caring for their own personal safety and rescued Shabbu without any assistance from the fire department. Meanwhile, local police arrived on the scene and the statement of victim, a resident of Bihar’s Champaran district, was recorded who stated that she stayed at the property with her family and her husband was employed as a gardener.

“On Tuesday, her husband had left for work, like usual, around 7.30 am. At 3 pm, her mother-in-law asked her to switch on the water motor. As she entered the room to do so, her mother-in-law closed the door from outside and threw a burning matchstick inside sending her clothes up in flames,” the officer said.

As Shabbu began getting suffocated, police said, she immediately rang up her husband who then made call to the PCR. “The PCR staff consisting of head constable Desh Raj Meena and constables Devender and Kailash have performed extraordinary good work by displaying their presence of mind, devotion to duty and high degree of professionalism by saving the life of the victim,” said Ranvir Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police (PCR).
A case under Indian Penal Code has been registered with Fatehpur Beri police station.
