Actors in trouble over endorsing Gurumurthy's firm

A day after the consumer court ordered Base Fertility Medical Science Private Limited and Srushti Medicare Research Foundation to compensate for the losses of nine patients, activists and patients are contemplating lodging a complaint against actors who advertised, mainly for Srushti Medicare.

K T Gurumurthy, the founder and managing director of Srushti Medicare Research Foundation, is also connected with the other institution. In January last year, he was arrested on the charge of cheating more than 30 people who claimed that he failed to keephis promise to help them have babies through surrogacy and egg donation.

An aggrieved person who spoke to Deccan Herald on Friday said it was after seeing posters of Kannada film actors Tara, Bhavya and Anubhava that she was of the opinion that the treatment would be reliable. “Actress Tara had also openly advertised for him in the media claiming that she was benefited by the treatment that she underwent there. It was by looking at all this that I decided to get treated by him,” she said.

An RTI activist, Nagesh, who has been associated with the issue, said there were several women who had taken a decision to get treated at Gurumurthy’s institute only after looking at the posters of actors. “The actors are now claiming that their advertisements were purely professional and that they did not do a background check before advertising for him. Innocent patients have fallen prey to it,” Nagesh said.

The activists and patients said they would file a complaint on Monday against actors who advertised for Base fertility package scheme.

Actor Tara said she was successfully treated at the centre before the controversy surfaced. She denied having advertised for them. “They misused my photographs without permission and made false claims keeping my case. I lodged a police complaint in this connection in January 2014,” she said.
