An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was injured after a rashly driven motorcycle rammed into a barricade he was manning at Janpath during the wee hours of Sunday.

The two motorcycle riders managed to gather themselves and ride away before the victim policeman’s colleagues could apprehend them.

A police officer said that even though the culprits continue to roam free, it is only a matter of time before they are nabbed.

A case of rash driving and causing hurt has been registered at Parliament Street police station based on the victim’s statement after he was treated at RML Hospital.

He sustained injuries to both his legs, but is said to be out of danger. The victim Ramnivas is deployed with the Parliament Street police station.

His duty was at a check post on the Janpath Road-Rajendra Prasad Crossing from 11 on Saturday to Sunday morning.

He had two other policemen for company. The incident took place at 3.50 am. The three policemen noticed two youths riding a motorcycle and heading towards them from Rajpath side.

Ramnivas said in his statement to police that the motorcycle was being driven rashly which prompted them to signal the motorcycle to stop.

Finding the two policemen blocking their way, the motorcycle rider steered the vehicle towards Ramnivas who was standing at the opposite end.

Ramnivas tried to run for cover, but the motorcycle rammed into the barricades. The policeman was hit on the legs by the barricades, causing him to fall.

The motorcycle riders too fell, but they picked themselves immediately and managed to ride away before the other two policemen could recover and nab them.

One of the two policemen then called the police control room (PCR) number for assistance upon which Ramnivas was rushed to RML Hospital. The suspects are being hunted, said police.
