PUC: Commerce, the pick of most students

Increasing job opportunities is reason

Like previous year, Commerce is the most sought after course for PUC admissions for the year 2015-16.

Following the announcement of SSLC results, all the colleges in the city have been distributing applications for admissions to PUC. A total of 35,844 students have passed the exams, an increase of 7.31 per cent, one of the main reasons for the students thronging the colleges. However, it is only those lucky students who will make it to the colleges irrespective of popularity, after the first list is announced based on the merit list.For the reason why commerce tops the priority, it is attributed to the increasing opportunities in banking sector due to the expansion of the same.

It offers optionals like computer science, economics, business studies and accountancy (CSEBA), geography, economics, business studies and accountancy (GEBA), history, economics, business studies and accountancy (HEBA), business studies, accountancy, statistics and basic maths (BASBM) and business studies, accountancy, statistics and computer science (BASCS). Such courses at the primary level will help them pursue higher studies in specialised courses like company secretary, chartered accountancy among others.

Demand for PCMBScience is the pick of the students who aim a career in the realm. It offers courses like physics, chemistry, maths and biography (PCMB), physics, chemistry, maths and computer science (PCMC) and physics, chemistry, maths and electronics (PCME). There is a spurt in demand for PCMB.

History is the choice of the students who want to make a career in civil services. It offers combinations of subjecs like history, economics, political science and geography (HEPG), history, economics, political science and sociology (HEPS).

According to Maharaja’s Junior College Principal Prof Siddaraju, about 3,000 applications have been distributed against the available 1,000 seats including arts, science and commerce combinations.

At Maharani’s College, as many as 3,000 applications, majority for commerce, have been distributed, according to its principal Prof Mohan.

In all, 210 colleges including government, aided and unaided private educational institutions are functioning in the district. Among them, highest of 105 colleges are located in Mysuru city including 71 unaided, 22 aided and 12 government colleges. In Mysuru taluk, five colleges are functioning, followed by 15 at H D Kote, 18 at Periyapatna, 22 at K R Nagar and 14 at Nanjangud taluk, 15 at T Narsipur and 17 at Hunsur.
