The State government is planning to introduce PU courses in its residential schools, Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said on Tuesday.

Anjaneya said PU courses will be introduced in residential schools where additional classrooms are available from 2015-16. At present, students can study up to 10th standard in residential schools run by the government, including Morarji Desai, Kittur Rani Chenamma and Ekalavya schools.

There are 510 government residential schools. The students studying in these schools secured 9697 per cent pass percentage in SSLC this year. They are students from poor families and it would be helpful if they get an opportunity to continue studies in the same school, Anjaneya said.

He said the Vidyasiri programme of providing students a stipend of Rs 1,500 per month if they do not get government hostel facilities would be extended to 75,000 students. The Social Welfare department has issued an order increasing the scholarship and monthly food expenses provided to pre-metric students belonging to SC communities. The move will cost the exchequer Rs 87.74 crore per annum and will benefit 8.6 lakh students. The announcement to hike the scholarship had been the 2015-16 budget.
