Nearly a month after a II PU student was shot dead by the hostel attendant, the Department of Pre University Education (DPUE) has issued a notice to Pragathi PU college.

Officials in the department told Deccan Herald that the department had on Wednesday sent a notice to Pragathi PU College, Kadugodi in this regard. The college has been given ten days' time to respond to the notice. According to an official in the department, once the college replies to the notice, DPUE will consider the reply and decide whether they are satisfied with the response. This would be forwarded to the State government.

The incident, where the 17-year-old II PU student Gauthami was shot dead, took place on March 31. The victim's friend too was severely injured in the attack.

Following the incident, the credentials of the college have come under the scanner. Parents have questioned the State government for failing to regulate educational institutions that have been functioning by flouting norms. The said college has residential facilities, which is not recognised by the PU Department.

The college is also said to have been conducting integrated programmes for competitive exams, which also was not permitted by the department.

Members of the City-based Parents’ Association, who have been actively pursuing the cause ever since the incident came to light, are demanding the department to immediately scrap affiliation to the college.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Mullahalli Suri, member of the association, said the department needed to act immediately in this regard. “The college has no permission to conduct integrated courses. We want the department to cancel the affiliation of the college,” he said.
