TN parties for all-party team to PM against Mekedatu

Last Updated 20 April 2015, 08:34 IST

A day after the Statewide bandh called by pro-Kannada outfits to protest Tamil Nadu’s opposition to Mekedatu project across the Cauvery river, political parties here have urged the state government to convene an all party meeting and lead a delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevent Karnataka from going ahead with its proposed project.

Echoing similar views, parties including Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) led by actor Vijayakanth and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), have said that the BJP at the Centre needs support of MPs of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Karunanidhi-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for passing bills in Rajya Sabha.

“Hence, the AIADMK and the DMK should announce that support in the Upper House can be extended only if the illegal construction of dam at Mekedatu is stopped. This way the danger of converting the Cauvery delta districts into a desert can be prevented,” PMK leader Ramadoss said.

He said Kannada organisations in Karnataka with indirect help of the State government had successfully conducted a dawn-to-dusk bandh condemning Tamil Nadu’s opposition.
