29-year-old man rapes 76-year-old woman

Police have arrested a 29-year-old construction labourer on the charge of raping a 76-year-old woman in her shed at Upkar Layout in Tavarekere police station limits on Tuesday.

Manikanta, a native of Tamil Nadu, had gone to the victim’s house in an inebriated state. He knew the woman well and used to meet her almost every day. On Tuesday night, after returning from work, he went to a bar where he got drunk. He knocked on the door but the elderly woman, who was living alone, didn’t respond. He then broke open the window, forced himself upon her and raped her. As the shocked victim fainted, he walked off.

She woke up only the next morning. She then called up her two children, who live separately, and narrated the incident to them. Police went looking for the suspect but he had disappeared. On enquiring, police found that his sister stays in the same locality. They managed to trace him to Tavarekere on Wednesday.

Labourer electrocuted

A 24-year-old construction labourer was electrocuted after  touching a live wire while working at an under-construction house in Srinivaspur, Yelahanka on Wednesday.

The Yelahanka police said Jagappa, a native of Yadgir, was working on the house belonging to one Raj Prabhakar. Around 7 pm, he came in contact with the live wire and collapsed. Seeing him lying motionless, his co-workers took him to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Police have booked the house owner for causing death due to negligence and arrested him.

Jagappa was living with his wife Malamma and one-year-old baby.  Woman ends life
In a suspected dowry death, a 24-year-old homemaker committed suicide at her home in Kadirenahalli, Banashankari in the early hours of Thursday.

Usha Rani, who was married to Kumar, a real estate agent, went into her bedroom on Wednesday morning and hanged herself. The incident came to light when her husband went into the bedroom. He then called the police.

Police said they didn’t find any suicide letter but suspected that the couple were of late fighting over personal matters. The couple, hailing from Devanahalli, had married over six years ago and have two children. The woman’s parents have made a complaint of dowry harassment against Kumar and his parents whom the police have detained for questioning. A case has been registered at the Banashankari police station.

Elderly bike rider killed

A 55-year-old motorcyclist died when his two-wheeler skidded off a slippery stretch of Chamarajpet main road following heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, police said.
Vajra Kumar, a florist from Shankarapuram, was going to his home in NS Palya, Bannerghatta Road, when his bike skidded off the road. He was flung off the bike, and suffered grievous injuries. Passersby rushed to his rescue and took him to a hospital but it was too late, police added.

In another accident, a 50-year-old man, who worked as an attendant at a private bank, was killed when a speeding lorry ran him near Bhadrappa Layout in Hebbal on Wednesday night.

Police gave his name as T Javaraiah, a resident of T Dasarahalli. In the evening, after returning from work, he had gone to meet a friend in Hebbal. On riding home, a lorry rear-ended him, throwing him off the bike. The lorry then ran him over, killing him on the spot, police said. Alert passersby managed to stop the lorry and catch the driver, who has been identified as Santhosh.
