Nine Meghalaya families under doomsday spell

Last Updated 11 April 2015, 19:25 IST

A self-styled doomsday ‘prophet’ has convinced nine tribal families in Meghalaya to quit their jobs, withdraw all the money they had from the bank and get their children to drop out from schools.

He has enabled the isolation of these families from society by making them believe that the end of world is near and doomsday will strike any time. This astonishing incident has been reported from remote Nongthhliew, in the West Khasi Hills district, nearly 65 km from state capital Shillong.

The ‘Christian’ prophet has got these believers not to take foodgrains provided by the government under the Public Distribution System (PDS) and made them disown their government documents , local dailies from Meghalaya reported. They have reportedly stopped going to any mainstream church.

Among those who have become doomsday believers,- two are Meghalaya government employees and three are school teachers. They have not been reporting to work. It seems they have resigned from their jobs.

When contacted West Khasi Hills district deputy commissioner S Kharlyngdoh did confirm the report but refrained to divulge details.

This incident has come as a major embarrassment for the Presbyterian Church, since the doomsday ‘prophet’ was reportedly affiliated to the Presbyterian Church of West Khasi hills district.
