At a time when the parents are preferring private educational institutions over the government schools hoping for quality education to their wards, two government schools in the district have already succeeded in wooing over 100 students for the next academic year starting from June.

The Government Model Higher Primary School at K R Pet in the district, which has completed its centenary year has already admitted 101 students. The credit goes to the alumni, who went on a door-to-door campaign and convinced the parents to admit their wards to the school. The government school, that once boasted of 800 student strength, drastically came down to 130, as the parents were besotted by convent education.

The Alumni Association, School Development and Monitoring Committee and Centenary Committee were formed for the overall development of the school. They took out a campaign and explained that the school will be distributing free uniforms, besides teaching English as one of the languages along with computer, music, dance and other activities.

Following this, LKG, UKG and class one were started under the ‘Makkala Mane’ scheme of the government, and the number of admissions for the year is 55, 24 and 22 respectively. Surprisingly, this includes seven children of the lecturers of the Government Polytechnic College and 12 children of government college lecturers and teachers.

Donation
The alumni meeting also chalked out plans to revive the school and decided to seek donation for the purpose. Accordingly, Pandavapura Assistant Commissioner H L  Nagaraju donated his one month’s salary, industrialist K S Somashekar Rs 25,000, former MLA K B Chandrashekar Rs 10,000, Dr B E Dinesh and others have liberally donated for the cause.

With the possibilities of the admissions increasing, there will be no compromise on the quality of the education, said in-charge head master M S Suresh.

K M Vasu, convenor of SDMC said that they have set a target of 1,000 students for the next five years to the KR Pet school.

Gejjalagere
The department of Public Instructions which came out with a unique plan of holding ‘Mothers Mela’ to attract women, highlighting ‘Mothers are the first Gurus’, had created awareness on the facilities available at the government schools.

In all, 120 children have been admitted to first standard, including 20 students to Gejjalagere Colony school, 16 to Gejjalagere school, 20 to Valagerehalli, 15 to Kudaragundi, 12 to Borapura and others.
