JOIN USIconic structures across the national capital plunged into darkness for an hour on Saturday as all non-essential lights were turned off to observe the Earth Hour to spread the message of energy conservation and create awareness about climate change.
All non-essential lights on the President’s Estate spread across a 320 acre expanse were switched off from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The residents of the President’s Estate were advised to switch off lights and electrical gadgets in their houses for an hour. A large number of Delhiites joined the Earth Hour campaign by turning off the lights at their respective houses.
Several people observed a candlelight vigil at the India Gate and the Connaught Place business district, where lights were turned off as well.
"Earth Hour brings together people across the globe to express their concern over the crisis of climate change. This year, Earth Hour India will ask people to switch off for the hour and also help build awareness on renewable energy,” Ravi Singh, Secretary General and CEO, WWF-India said.
Lights were also turned off at the Akshardham Temple on the banks of the river Yamuna. Air Force installations across the country also joined the campaign. More than 7,000 cities in 172 countries are taking part in the world’s largest ever demonstration.
