80 Indians leave Yemen for Djibouti

Last Updated 28 March 2015, 21:00 IST

Even as New Delhi is exploring options for evacuating all Indians from conflict-hit Yemen, some 80 citizens left capital Sana’a for Djibouti on Saturday.

The Embassy of India in Djibouti will assist all Indian citizens leaving Yemen to return to the country, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated.

“Eighty Indians are leaving on Yemenia Airways’ first flight from Sana’a today (Saturday). They are headed to Djibouti, where the Indian mission will assist in their journey home,” said MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.

There are about 3,500 Indians, mostly nurses, in Sana’a and in the rest of Yemen.
Soon after Saudi Arabia's warplanes started raiding military camps of the Shia Houthi group in Sana’a last Thursday, New Delhi started weighing possible options to evacuate Indian nationals caught up there.
