Prosecution to keep pursuing Salman case

Last Updated 28 March 2015, 20:49 IST

Notwithstanding the move of actor Salman Khan to deny all charges and evidence against him in the 13-year-old hit-and-run case, the prosecution said its case was strong and that it would continue to pursue it.

“We will continue our case. The accused may say anything, and he has the right to defend himself. Our case is strong, and we will keep pursuing it,” said special public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat at the Mumbai sessions court complex on Friday after the actor’s statement was recorded under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) by additional sessions judge D W Deshpande.

“The Section 313 of the CrPC gives him an opportunity to explain his position, and he has done that,” said Gharat.

The recording of Khan’s statement is a crucial phase in the trial, the prosecution having examined 27 witnesses and eyewitness in the case.

The hearing of the case before the sessions court will resume on Monday, and the defence is expected to present the list of its witnesses.

Besides the charge of culpable homicide (Section 304, part 2, IPC), the actor is also facing charges of causing the death of one person by negligent driving (Section 279), causing hurt to persons by act endangering personal safety (Section 337) and causing damage to property (Section 427).

Khan is also facing charges under provisions of Motor Vehicles Act (driving without licence), and provisions of the Bombay Prohibition Act (driving after consuming liquor).
