Vokkaliga Cong leaders divided

Last Updated 20 March 2015, 21:21 IST

If Vokkaliga legislators of the BJP and the JD(S) unitedly protested demanding a CBI probe into the death of IAS officer D K Ravi here on Friday, their counterparts in the Congress party remained just mute spectators, even though many of them disapprove of the government’s handling of the issue.

Congress legislators are divided over the demand for CBI probe. Many of them feel the CBI should investigate the case. Vokkaliga legislators especially fear the party’s image would be tarnished if the public sentiment is not respected. But none of them is ready to come on record.

Vokkaliga legislators, especially those from the old Mysore region, believe the BJP and the JD(S) were “extracting” political mileage out of the issue. The ruling party should either come up with a strategy to counter them or quietly hand over the case to the CBI.

The issue has even created a rift between the influential brothers in the State Congress–Bengaluru Rural MP D K Suresh and Energy Minister D K Shivakumar. Suresh had openly written to party president Sonia Gandhi seeking the CBI probe. But Shivakumar has been opposing the same.
