The officials of the Animal Husbandry and Health department of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Sunday raided several illegal slaughterhouses in DJ Halli and shutdown eight shops.

BBMP Executive Engineer Erappa Reddy told Deccan Herald that the eight shops were operating in violation of the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964. Some abattoirs were even throwing the carcasses of cows into the huge stormwater drain in the ward, he said.

BBMP officials were assisted by the DJ Halli police in the operation. The action was taken in the wake of the recent High Court order which directed the Palike to clean of the DJ Halli ward by March 16.According to the Palike, more than 30 slaughterhouses operate in DJ Halli and surrounding areas.

“We saw that the SWD was filled with carcasses and was emanating a foul stench. Presently, there are three BBMP authorised slaughterhouses at Tannery Road, City Market and Pottery Road. However, people continue to slaughter at these illegal units,” said Dr Kantharaj from BBMP’s Department of Animal Husbandry (East Zone).  The Palike’s ward engineers said that they plan to continue the raid for another three to four days. On Monday, BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana will inspect the area, they added.
