Learning lessons from the first attempt, the second 1,000 MW unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), which is undergoing hot run process, is expected for commercial operations by June this year.

Officials are hoping to give final touches including loading real fuel in the unit within few weeks.

“The steam flow path and steam relief devices has been tested during the hot run process which was started on February 28. This test will be repeated again,” a senior KNPP official said.

Stating that as on January 2015, the second unit has achieved a physical progress of 97.68 per cent, the official said measures are being taken to avoid recurrence of several snags including turbine problem during the operations of first unit.

Technical snags
After facing several hitches including technical snags, the much-awaited commercial operations of the 1,000 MW KNPP first unit commenced from December 31, 2014.

“After successful hot run process, we need to obtain Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) permission to load real fuel in the reactor,” the official said, adding that once fuel is loaded, the unit will go for criticality tests (the neutron multiplication in the reactor) before going commercial.

Like unit-1, the unit-2 reactor will also be loaded with fuel assemblies containing Uranium Oxide.
