Murdered girl was 'pregnant', wanted abortion

Last Updated 12 March 2015, 01:59 IST

A 17-year-old girl  found killed in outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy on Tuesday was apparently pregnant and had been murdered by her boyfriend, police sources said.

She had wanted him to help her with an abortion, police sources said.

A heated exchange over this and subsequent scuffle between them on Tuesday morning ended with the boyfriend killing her.

The suspect, believed to be about 18 years of age, was nabbed on Wednesday. Police said he has confessed to his crime. The recovery of the body also saw protests by locals on Tuesday as well as Wednesday.

“The locals suspected that we would let go of the suspect. That is why they protested on Wednesday,” said an officer directly related to the investigations.

The girl was found with her throat slit in an isolated portion of a field near her home on Tuesday morning. Based on prima facie evidence and the suspect’s confession, police ruled out rape before the murder. Whether the girl was actually pregnant too would be confirmed only after her medical reports arrive, said police.

But police officers directly associated with the probe told Deccan Herald that the victim’s pregnancy led to her murder. “The girl had learnt about her pregnancy a few days ago and had been pestering her boyfriend to get the child aborted. But her partner had expressed his helplessness citing lack of money,” the officer said.

The couple met near her home early on Tuesday where she allegedly threatened to report the matter to police if he did not help her. She also threatened to complain to her four brothers which had left the youth scared.

The conversation soon turned into a heated exchange and a subsequent scuffle between the two. He first struck her head with a brick in a fit of anger.

“The strike left the girl unconscious which scared him. He then decided to do away with the girl and slit her throat with a knife,” said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer District).

The suspect was nabbed based on the call records of the girl. The knife and a bloodstained shirt were recovered from his home. The suspect, a native of Bihar, lives with his uncle in Shahbad Dairy and is a distant learning graduation student.
