Birla crusades for women

Last Updated 11 March 2015, 02:16 IST

Getting more women police personnel posted in Mangolpuri area tops the agenda of 27-year-old Aam Adami Party legislator Rakhi Birla who wants improvement in law and order situation and women security.

The youngest among four siblings, Birla claims that her family supported her to join politics.
The journalist-turned-politician says she was inspired by the Anna Hazare anti-corruption movement in 2012 to join politics.

“I just went to cover the Anna movement, and on the spur of the movement I decided to join as a volunteer,” she says. “Earlier my work was to telecast. Now the area of my operation has changed drastically. I now go to the grassroot level to serve people,” she says.

She is also planning to pursue PhD in Mass Communication.

Birla claims her busy schedule does not give her much room to pamper herself. But given a choice she would want to relax all by herself and sleep in her free time.

The firebrand former Delhi minister wants a safe environment for women in her area.
“In Mongolpuri people have seen poor law and order with high rate of crimes like eve-teasing, robbery and snatching, which should be put to an end,” says Birla.

Born and brought up in the Mongolpuri, Birla is aware of all the problems in the area and is eager to tackle them.

“I had a meeting with the police officials of the area in which I demanded more female police staff and police patrolling,” she says.

Also, more CCTV cameras and functional streetlights to drive away dark spots will enhance the security cover for women in the area, the legislator adds.

The young woman politician became a giant killer in the recent Delhi elections by defeating Congress veteran R K Chauhan by 22,699 votes in Mangolpuri constituency.
