As Karun Nair reached 248 with a pulled boundary off Tamil Nadu’s Vijay Shankar on Tuesday, the 23-year-old Karnataka right-hander reached a significant landmark.

Karun went past GR Viswanath as the highest individual run-getter in a Ranji Trophy final for Karnataka. GRV had made 247 against Uttar Pradesh in the 1977-78 season. The legendary batsman was quite happy that someone finally went past his long-standing mark.

“I’m glad that somebody has broken my record, especially a youngster. Karun richly deserves the triple hundred. His temperament was brilliant and selection of shots too was commendable. I watched his innings on television,” said Viswanath. ‘Vishy’ also lauded Karun for his concentration.

“Karun’s effort over the past two days is commendable. Scoring 300-plus runs in a Ranji Trophy final is amazing. His concentration was spot on. He never took any risks and I would say it was batsmanship of the highest class. At the start of the match he was short of runs in the season, but he chose the right platform to beautifully showcase his craftsmanship.”

Karun, on his part, expressed satisfaction that he was getting praise from a legend. “It’s a special feeling to be on the same side as GRV sir. I have not interacted with him much and I remember him saying once to make every opportunity count. It’s a special feeling that all of them are mentioning that I’ve done a good job. I’d just like to keep going and make them proud,” he said.

On reaching his maiden triple hundred, Karun said: “It was a good feeling. Samarth had told me to do some other celebration when I reach 300, but I didn’t do anything different. I don’t feel the necessity to celebrate much, it just doesn’t happen at that time.”

Remaining patient, Karun said, helped him get to the landmark. “The first half hour was the most challenging. We were looking at playing out the first half hour and then we knew that it would be all done. I needed to be patient. The field was spread out and I had to look out for singles.”
