Last Updated 09 March 2015, 17:53 IST

MLA Suresh Babu opined that the amendment to the land acquisition Act will leave the farmers in trouble.

While the industrialists will be largely benefited, the farmers will get a raw deal. The decision will only lead to food scarcity in the country.

He was speaking after inaugurating a special workshop on community organisation and awareness programme on organic farming, organised on the premises of the Government First Grade Degree College, by the Department of Social Works, at Ajjenahalli village in Shettikere hobli, here recently.

Elaborating on the matter, the MLA said that the new Land Acquisition Act had created confusion with regards to the compensation issue. There was no clarity on this matter, he opined.

Compensation

Suresh Babu said he would make all efforts to ensure that the farmers who had lost their land under the Hemavathi scheme, will get compensation at the earliest. Under the scheme, water from the Hemavathi river will be channelled to the 26 lakes water bodies in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk.

And the farmers who had lost their land to facilitate the scheme will get compensation soon, he added.

Reviving land

Speaking at the programme, organic farming expert B Basavaraju explained that due to the extensive use of fertilisers and single crop cultivation pattern, the land will soon become barren. The government had earmarked an amount of Rs 6,500 crore for reviving and rejuvenating the fertility of the land, he said.

Deliberating on the topic of atrocities against women, member of the Child Rights Council C G Mahesh explained about the means and methods of fighting against such evils.

Agriculture Assistant Officer Somashekhar explained in detail about the various facilities extended to the farmers by the Agriculture Department.

Taluk Panchayat member Ramesh Kumar, Shettikere Gram Panchayat President Dakshayini, Vice-President G M Nagaraj,  Chikka-nayakanahalli Government Degree College Principal V Varadaraju, leaders Basavaraju, A B Nagaraju, Mahesh, Raj Kumar and several others were present on the occasion.
