Dolly Arora who was set on fire last week claimed that she was being tortured over her parents’ failure to give a Honda City car as dowry. She was also being forced to arrange Rs 2 lakh of which Rs 1.70 lakh was to be deposited in a court which summoned her brother-in-law over a loan.

In her statement to Executive Magistrate (Rajouri Garden) Surendra Kumar, Dolly claimed that due to the torture, she was also forced to take loans from her office and colleagues.

The 30-year-old had married Jatin on December 6, last year and they were staying at a rented house in Mohan Garden.

Her statement has also revealed that not only her husband, but her in-laws were also involved in the attack on her on February 26.

The woman sustained 45 per cent burns and has undergone treatment at Safdarjung Hospital and Lok Nayak Hospital. She has now named her father-in-law Ramesh, mother-in-law Veena, brothers-in-law Prateek and Gaurav and sister-in-law Richa.

“The torture began soon after marriage. I was told that I must bring a Honda City car promised by my father as dowry,” Dolly said in her statement.

She also claimed that Ramesh and Veena had been demanding Rs 2 lakh as Prateek had to deposit Rs 1.70 lakh in a court on March 11.

“Prateek had taken a loan which he failed to return,” she added.
It is also alleged that Dolly faced physical and verbal abuse by Prateek and Gaurav and it was often motivated by Ramesh and Veena.

Due to the torture, Dolly called her family members home on February 26 and they had a heated argument with Jatin and his family members.

“Dolly claimed that her family members were in the building when Prateek poured kerosene and Ramesh set her on fire,” said a police officer. Her parents and sister Sapna doused the flames.

A case under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed over Dolly’s statement with Uttam Nagar police station.
