JOIN USTwo top militants of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) were killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in the Tral area of south Kashmir on Saturday.
Sources said based on specific intelligence about the presence of ultras in Ratsuna, Tral, 40 km from here, a joint operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles units of the Army and a Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday night.
“The village was effectively cordoned preventing escape of militants. Contact with militants was established in the late hours of Friday, and firing continued for some time. The exchange of heavy firing stopped due to the darkness,” they said and added that intermittent gunshots were heard throughout the night. A defence spokesperson said both the hiding militants were killed after exchange of heavy fire on Saturday morning.
He said two AK-47 rifles, ammunition and other war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site.
