Don't neglect Kannada language, counsels Jain

Strive to preserve culture for next generation

It is not a mistake to speak another language. But, one should not neglect one’s own language. All those who have been born in Karnataka should accept their mother tongue as Kannada, said district in-charge minister K Abhayachandra Jain.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 12th district Kannada literary meet at Ambale A R Krishnashastry mantapa at district playground on Friday.

We all should strive to preserve Kannada language and culture for the next generation. Literature, which upholds humanitarian values should be created, he said.

Jain meanwhile felt for a need to create awareness among children in schools, on literature. Literary meets of these kind help litterateurs, scholars and intellectuals to churn out various issues, which are connected with the good-will of the state.

State government has taken initiatives through the department of Kannada and Culture, to reprint Kannada literary works. Also, several programmes are being implemented through Kannada development authority.

MLA C T Ravi said that every household should use Kannada. Language alone is not a medium to attain livelihood. If the knowledge of English was to fetch one with a job, there should have been no unemployment in England and America.

MLA Y S V Datta said that villagers alone have saved Kannada language. It is unfortunate that the government is serving notices to Kannada medium schools, for the reason that the strength in Kannada medium schools is less. Regional languages can be saved only if Kannada medium is made compulsory in Primary Education.

If the Chief Minister takes a delegation of other state Chief Minister to the Centre and pressurises the government to bring amendment in the constitution, the confusion on the issue of education in Kannada medium, could be solved, he said.

MLA B B Ningaiah urged that government should pass an order to officials and elected representatives to send their children to only Kannada medium schools. MLC Motamma, MLC Gayatri Shanthegowda, literary meet President S Girijashankar, Coir Development Board President C Nanjappa, Zilla Panchayat President Bhagya Ranganath, Deputy Commissioner B S Shekharappa, district Kannada Sahitya Parishat President N S Shivaswamy and others were present.
