DNA test to trace owner of buffalo

Last Updated 27 February 2015, 01:53 IST

After having failed to resolve the ownership dispute over a buffalo between two farmers at an Uttar Pradesh village despite trying every trick, police have now decided to take help of science. Police would now go for a DNA test of the animal to trace the real owner.

“One of the claimants of the buffalo has said it has a calf. The calf is currently with him. We can get the DNA test of the buffalo and the calf done,” said a senior police officer with Mohanlalganj police station.

The real owner could be traced if the DNA test of the buffalo and the calf matches, he added.
According to the reports, Ram Kishen, a resident of Mohanlalganj, on the outskirts of the state capital, had lodged a report with police that his buffalo has been missing. The buffalo was traced a few days back but before police could hand over the animal to Kishen, another claimant appeared from nowhere putting police in a quandary.

Police had initially tried to resolve the problem by letting the animal free to see to whose house would go. But the buffalo proved smarter. It simply stood its ground and did not go anywhere.
They then decided to hand over the buffalo to the person who was able to milk it. That also failed to resolve the matter as both succeeded in milking the buffalo.

It remains to be seen if the DNA test is able to resolve the dispute and results in tracing the real owner.

Since the DNA test could take some time, the buffalo would be kept at the police
station and enjoy their hospitality.

“We will have to feed the animal but then we will also be getting the milk,” said a policeman at the police station.
