People's representatives stress on spot inspection of works

With funds under the second phase of Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) stopped by the Central government, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to approach the State government, seeking funds to complete the works taken up under JnNURM.

Disclosing the same, Mayor R Lingappa said that the decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Revenue and district in-charge minister V Sreenivas Prasad, at DC office, on Thursday. He said that instructions have been sent to authorities to organise separate meetings of the works taken up under JnNURM, by MCC, Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), KSRTC and others respectively. Prasad has also sought a probe into the alleged irregularities in the works taken up under JnNURM.

Lingappa said that with Centre not releasing any funds, various works taken up under JnNURM had been affected, resulting in delays in completion of works. To avoid the same, MCC and other local bodies concerned have sought funds from the State, in the next budget. A list of projects that have been taken up in the city and the amount required to complete the same, will be submitted to the State shortly, he said.

With Centre discontinuing funds, major works taken up under JnNURM, such as the integrated solid waste management system, 24x7 water supply and other works have been affected.

Inspection
With several complaints of sub-standard works taken up by contractors in MCC limits, elected representatives present at the meeting, said that spot inspection of the works taken up should be conducted. If works were found to be sub-standard, appropriate action should be taken against them.

During the meeting, officials blamed the contractors for the delay in completion of works, especially the ones taken up at core heritage zone of the city. However, elected representatives claimed that the laxity of officials in ensuring that the works were completed was also the cause for the delay in works.

Lingappa said that a previous meeting regarding JnNURM works was conducted a year ago and officials had failed to implement the instructions given during the meeting. Some officials were taken to task for not furnishing the necessary bills documents regarding the works taken up under JnNURM, he added.
