With intermittent showers in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches continuing in Kashmir, the MeT department has predicted more wet weather for the state until February 24.

 “Many places in the state are likely to witness heavy snowfall and rainfall from February 19 to 24 due to western disturbance over J&K, which may trigger avalanches and landslides,” said a Met official.

“On February 19, sky is likely to remain partly cloudy with occurrence of rains and thunderstorm. From February 21 to 23, there is possibility of heavy snowfall and rains,” he said and added there will be significant decrease in day temperatures and slight rise in night temperature during this period.

Higher reaches of the valley including Sonamarg, Gagengir, Kullan, Zojila and Gund in Ganderbal district received fresh snowfall, reports said.

The official said Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.4 degree Celsius, up by more than a degree from the previous night’s 3.9

Ski resort Gulmarg, which received 5.2 mm rainfall during the night, recorded the minimum temperature of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 1.2 degrees previous night, he said. Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which serves as base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, received 0.4 mm of rainfall and the minimum temperature there settled at 1.2 degrees Celsius which was same as the previous night.
