Congress is all set to highlight the woes of farmers living on the fringes of Delhi by organising election rallies of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi in rural belt of the capital.

“We are planning public meetings by Rahul Gandhi in Bawana, Narela, Mundka and Najafgarh areas where land acquisition is a key issue. The dates are being finalised,” a senior Congress leader said.

Rahul will kick-start the series of big campaign meetings of the Congress by addressing a rally at Shastri Park in east Delhi on January 29.

This would be followed up by a rally by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on February 1 at Mithaghar Gaon near Badarpur.

Another rally to be addressed by senior leaders, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, is also in the work.

The recent amendments to the Land Acquisition Act notified by promulgating an Ordinance have put a question mark on the farm lands sold by the farmers living on the outskirts of the capital, a senior leader said, adding the Congress would take up the issue vigorously during the election campaign.

Besides, a road show by Rahul Gandhi is also planned in Greater Kailash and Kalkaji. A key drawback for the Congress in the Delhi elections is the absence of a functional organisational structure in the capital.

A few months back, the Congress had dissolved the Delhi unit of the party as also the district-level committees with an intention to overhaul the organisation.

Arvinder Singh Lovely was appointed as the president of the Delhi unit and Haroon Yusuf was named as the leader of the party in the Assembly.

The Congress is running the election campaign with the help of 14 observers appointed for each of the 14 districts. These are helped by a team of five persons each, covering the 70 Assembly segments in the capital.

The party believes that it would give a tough fight in at least 24 constituencies where it hopes to perform well.
