Tavel beats Trishul to claim honours

Haryana’s Ravinder Tavel defeated local lad Trishul Chinnappa via play-off to emerge champion in the PGTI Qualifying School Final Stage 2015 here on
Friday.

After both the golfers ended regulation play tied on eight-under 280, Tavel beat Trishul on the second play-off hole to kick-start his professional ambitions on a bright note at the Eagleton Golf Resort.

“I’m delighted with this effort,” said Tavel after carding a final round 70. “It gives me the self-belief to do well in the 2015 PGTI season. Now that I’m in the top 100 of the tour, I will get more playing opportunities and can thus improve my game. I’ve worked really hard to get here.”

Despite the defeat, KGA’s Trishul can pat himself for staging a fine comeback. Having started the event with a disastrous three-over 75, Trishul bounced back with two successive cards of 69 before rounding off with a brilliant five-under 67.

It was sweet day for top amateur Udayan Mane, who trains at the very same course. He shot a fine 69 to finish second, one shot behind the leaders.

Chandigarh’s K Raghav Bhandari and Delhi’s Anirudh Goyal shared fourth place at three-under 285.

In all, a total of 38 players earned playing rights for 2015 season, including veteran and two-time Indian Open winner Ali Sher (tied 13th) and Feroz Singh
Garewal.
