Kejriwal withheld information: Walia

Her plea to cancel nomination rejected

Congress candidate from New Delhi seat Kiran Walia has accused the AAP rival of withholding information about an FIR and his actual residence from the Election Commission.

When the returning officer of the constituency rejected her plea for cancellation of Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, she said, “We are waiting for a written order of the returning officer so that we can challenge the decision in court with proper ground work.”

Walia, a former minister in the Delhi cabinet, said Kejriwal didn’t mention one FIR related to a complaint by a political group, in his affidavit. The returning officer verbally told us that a complaint does disqualify a person from becoming a candidate, she said.

“Our argument on this was that if people do not fill the column in the nomination seeking details of FIRs and police cases, then people could even hide their history about involvement in crimes,” she said.

She also questioned the fact that the residential address in Kejriwal’s election identity card shows his address to be in B K Dutt Colony near Jor Bagh, where as he actually lives in Ghaziabad.

“Doesn’t this amount to giving false information to the Election Commission,” said Walia.
Kejriwal’s residential address in his election identity card is given as 87, Block K, B K Dutt Colony.

Along with Kejriwal, Gopal Mohan of the Aam Aadmi Party filed nominations from New Delhi seat as a covering candidate for him.

A covering candidate files papers along with the official candidate of a party so that the party would have a representation in the election even if the official candidate’s nomination lands in trouble.

Soon after Walia gave a complaint against Kejriwal, his nomination papers were put on hold briefly but the returning officer later decided to approve his candidature.
Walia, along with Kejriwal, filed her nomination papers on Wednesday. She raised the issues related with Kejriwal’s nominations on the same day.
