Call for lesson on road safety in school curricula

MLA J R Lobo has directed transport department officials to organise a workshop for department staff and City corporation officials to solve the technical problems first to increase road safety in Mangaluru. 


Presiding over the inaugural ceremony of 26th National Road Safety Week 2015, organised by the district administration, Department of Transport & Police at Police Community Hall, on Thursday, he said there is  problem of proper footpaths in City, many of the humps don’t have reflectors and there are lack of traffic management staff. 

Traffic department can think of taking help from volunteers for traffic management. Lack of punishment also causes problem, he said. 
Rule in curriculum

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that a resolution will be passed on adding lesson on traffic rules in school curriculum in the event and a proposal will be sent to the government. 

He stressed on the active participation of public in the weekly event. Unless their demand service will be poor.  The problems of senior citizens should be discussed in the programme, he said. 

There is a proposal before the Road Transport Authority (RTA) of conducting a corrective class for traffic rules offenders than just imposing fine. Here the offender must undergo a class on traffic rules to get back the licence, the Deputy Commissioner said. 


Police Commissioner S Murugan said that though we blame western culture, there are lot of things to learn about road safety from them. 

The slogan of the weekly- ‘safety is not just a slogan, it is a way of life’ is very much suitable for them. They follow even small things obediently and respect the pedestrians. “Road safety can’t be achieved by enforcement of law, but it should be a part of life. Under Safe City programme, proposals have been sent on fixing CCTVs and signals in various parts of the city,” he said. 

SP Dr Sharanappa in India every year around 3.70 lakh people die due to road accidents, which is great lose of human resource. In Mangaluru there is no lack of awareness, but many don’t just follow the rules, he said. 

Meanwhile, U Hasanabba of Charmadi, Sahara Banu of Puttur, J Abdul Ravood and Nelson Pereira of Mangaluru were honoured for helping victims during road accidents and helping cops during traffic jams.

Neelu Murugan of City was honoured for safe driving. Police Commissioner S Murugan released handouts, pamphlets and stickers with messages on road safety. 
Corporation Bank Chairman and Managing Director S R Bansal inaugurated the programme. Karnataka State Bus Owners’ Association President Rajavarma Ballal was present among others. 

As a part of the programme, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim inaugurated a jatha from Bavuta Gudde to the police community hall by schoolchildren, NSS and NCC cadets, bus drivers, driving school staff and public. 

Variety of programmes will be conducted in different parts of the district, till January 28.
