'You should be your own competition'

Sonam Kapoor was in the City to promote her upcoming film Dolly Ki Doli. Produced by ‘Arbaaz Khan Productions’, the movie also features Pulkit Samrat, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma and is directed by debutant Abhishek Dogra.

“The movie is surely going to entertain you for complete ninety minutes. The crew and cast of the movie were amazing,” says Sonam.

The movie, that centres around the character of Dolly (Sonam), is said to be a woman-centric romantic comedy. But the actress says that it gives importance to all the characters equally. “I don’t like the phrase ‘female-oriented film’. Everybody thinks that it is a female-oriented film because it is named after my character. For me, it is more of an ensemble. Every character is equally important. The actors are amazing and the movie is beautifully edged out,” she says.

The actress will be seen in a slightly unconventional role who meets young guys, marries them and cons them of their money.  “I think every role is difficult. I don’t think any role that I have done has been easy. That is why I choose to do these kind of roles. There is always a challenge,” she says. The actress, who tries to enhance her acting skills with every film of hers, says, “I don’t think any movie should be a pathbreaking one in anybody’s career. Every film has to make the craft better.

I need to get better in whatever I am doing with each film.” The actress adds, “I conduct workshops before every film. I sit with the director and co-actors to get the vibe of it. I read a lot of books and watch a lot of films. I look at a lot of videos to figure out the tonality of the character.”

The stylish actress, who doesn’t care much about the competition in the industry, says that she is her own competition. “I don’t compete with anybody but myself. I think it is more important to get better with every step you take and it is better to compete with yourself. If I do a film and my performance was six on ten, then the next film I hope that I am a seven out of ten. So you should be your own competition rather than competing with others.

You should have blinders on and go forward and look into your goal,” she says. The actress, who is noted to have the best fashion sense, says, “I love dressing up. I like being a girl.” But is the fashionista image hampering her acting career? She says, “With the kind of films that are being offered to me now, it doesn’t make me feel that my love for fashion is affecting my career. After Raanjhanaa, people have completely forgotten about me as a fashionista.

People know that I am extremely fashionable. But I hope that they take me seriously as an actor.”  The actress, who ho-pes that her movie does well in the box-office, concludes with the message to the aspiring actors — “Work hard and hopefully, you will get lucky.”
