Fog affects flights in Delhi

Hundreds of passengers in the national capital were inconvenienced on Sunday, as flight services were hit severely due to fog.
 

While two flights were cancelled due to prevailing weather conditions, another 70 flights were delayed at the IGIA, said an airport authority official. 

Sixty-eight flights were conducted using instrumental landing system.
Delhi had a respite from the intense cold, but most northern states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir continued to reel under chilly conditions on Sunday.

In Delhi, early morning fog had brought down visibility levels to below fifty metres, affecting 100 flights and about 60 trains, causing great inconvenience to hundreds of passengers. While two flights were cancelled, another 70 were delayed at the IGIA, said an airport authority official. Sixty-eight flights were conducted using instrumental landing system.

“During low visibility procedure, 10 flights were conducted under CAT-I, 13 under CAT-II and 45 under CAT-III B. This includes both domestic and international flights,” the official said, adding that there were no diversions. The fog was intense as there was no wind, said R K Jenamani, Director, Met department, IGIA. “Flight services were severely affected due to fog condition. The fog is likely to reduce from January 19 onwards,” Jenamani said.

 “The visibility was zero between 4 am and 10 am. The condition will improve further after January 21, as fresh western disturbances are expected. The Capital is also likely to witness light rainfall with thunderstorms from January 21 to 23,” he added.  Sixty-three trains due to arrive in Delhi were delayed and 27 trains to depart from here were rescheduled.

Meanwhile, Kashmir valley and Ladakh region continued to reel under intense cold wave as minimum temperatures dipped to minus 15 degrees in Leh and Kargil towns.
