World rock climbing champion from Austria, Killian Fischhuber, has been camping on the Badami hill ranges for a week. He has planned to scale the entire ranges and also find new routes between January 12 and 28.

Fischhuber, who has proved his skills by successfully scaling many challenging rocks across the globe, has fallen for the beauty of the hills in Badami. This is the second time he is climbing the hills here. In 2014, Fischhuber had hoisted flags on the summits of the hill ranges in Badami and Hampi.

Rock climbers Tohin Satarkar from Pune, and Ganesh and Ishtaling Sirsi from Badami have been helping out Fischhuber with the routes in his expedition. Fischhuber is accompanied by another Austrian rock climber and cameraman Martin Hans. They have plans to climb the hills at Hampi next.

Fischhuber had uploaded a video on YouTube of him climbing the steep rocks of Badami from his last trip, and it has got more than one lakh views so far. People from across the world have expressed their amazement about the beauty of Badami.
‘Facilities needed’

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Fischhuber said there was a need to promote the rock-climbing areas in Badami to attract more enthusiasts to the place from India and abroad.

He said basic facilities for rock climbers and a proper route through the ranges are also necessary.

At the age of 12, he discovered his passion for rock climbing and he translated it into a career. He has been doing the same for over 20 years now.

He has been representing Austria in championships since 1999. He won the ‘World Boulder Rock Master’ title thrice, in 2005, 2008 and 2009. He was the European Rock Climbing Champion for 2008.
