Skipper Chhetri set for new season

Bengaluru FC couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the 2015 season as they went on to clinch their maiden Federation Cup beating, Dempo SC 2-1 in their own den on Sunday.

BFC skipper Sunil Chhetri was understandably elated. “Winning the Federation Cup is always a pleasant feeling. When you keep winning matches and you keep scoring goals you start to forget about it the very next day. In eight months, hopefully, we will be talking about the next I-League that we won,” said Chhetri.

The captain himself had a great outing in Goa netting six goals. He was the top scorer along with Dempo’s Tolgay Ozbey.“It is only because I am part of a great team here,” he said.

“It does not matter. Honestly, it has always been about winning games and that is what we strive for,” added the AIFF Player of the Year. Though Chhetri was all praise for his teammates who put up a great show over the course of 14 days, the skipper was disappointed at the scheduling of the tournament.

“The players are doing really well but, having said that I hope there were a lot more gaps between matches because you are putting a lot of pressure on the players and a lot of them are playing under risk.

“Six games in 14 days is a schedule you won’t hear of anywhere else in the world. It wasn’t easy, not only for us but every team in the tournament especially Dempo and us who went all the way.”

He hoped that the organisers will take a note and doa better job next time. “I hope we can plan this tournament much better in the future so that the youngsters can recover and play well and as much as they can,” he concluded.
