An assistant sanitary inspector with the municipal corporation was shot dead by unidentified assailants in east Delhi’s Shahdara on Thursday.

The incident took place at 6.30 am, barely 100 metres away from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) R A Sanjeev.

Ashok Kumar, 45, hailed from Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district and lived with family in Khera village near Shahdara.

He was posted with Shahdara North Zone of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
“Initially, Ashok was believed to be a victim of road accident. But a gunshot wound was found while his medico-legal case was being prepared in Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital,” a police officer said.

On Thursday morning, Ashok left home for office on his motorcycle.
He had covered some distance when somebody shot him dead.

Ashok was found lying in a pool of blood by a rickshaw-puller. The rickshaw-puller thought that Ashok probably fell off his motorcycle and suffered serious injuries.

“The rickshaw-puller informed police and took Ashok to Swami Dayanand Hospital. Doctors pronounced him dead on admission. Later, a PCR van staff took the body to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors told us that Ashok was shot in his back and it was not a case of road accident,” the officer added.

A case of murder has been filed with GTB Enclave police station.
A police team met Ashok’s family members to inquire if he was having any dispute with anybody or was receiving any life threat. His family members rejected any such possibility.

“Initial investigation into the case revealed that Ashok was earlier posted in Nand Nagri. A municipal corporation employee posted at his previous office was also murdered in April last year. We are trying to find out if Ashok’s murder has anything to do with the previous murder,” the officer said.
