A 13-year-old boy died after being hit in the chest by a cricket ball at a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharth Nagar district, about 225 km from here.

According to the police, the incident occurred during a match at Pathara village on Sunday.

Sources said the boy, Chandan Yadav, was a class VI student at a local school near the village. Chandan was batting when a rising ball hit him straight on the chest. “The boy collapsed on the pitch,” said a local official.

After all efforts by his team mates to revive him failed, the boy was rushed to the nearby primary health centre where doctors declared him dead.

Chandan’s father lives in Mumbai and earns a living doing petty jobs, sources said.
The police said there were no clashes during the match. “It was the third ball of the over which hit the boy,” said the official.

The incident comes close on the heels of death of Australian cricketer Phil Hughes after being hit on the head by a bouncer.

In another incident in UP's Aligarh district, a youth was allegedly shot dead following a clash during a cricket match. The incident, according to the police, occurred at Iglas area in the district on Sunday evening.

The youth, Hari Om, was shot dead by a member of the rival team, which had been defeated in the match played earlier in the day. The  accused, Bhudev, is absconding.

A case has been registered and a manhunt has been launched to nab Bhudev, the police added.
